Its surface is deliberately subdued—quiet, low-reflective—allowing it to recede in use rather than compete with the relationship between tea and vessel. Compared to ceramic it is lighter; unlike metal it carries no coldness. The lacquered wood provides basic water resistance and stability, able to hold small amounts of spilled tea without immediate absorption or visible staining. The combination of lacquer and wood also introduces a subtle cushioning effect, so when a cup is placed on it, the sharp contact sound is softened. Both touch and sound are gently moderated, making the act of use quieter.
